History:

His past life, like his missing eye and a number of other things about him, is something he likes to make various jokes about. Nobody knows the truth about it, if he ever tells the truth about it; and it's brought a lot of rumors up about his origins and what brought him to Tara. On the other hand, he's such a delight to be around that nobody really worries much about where the mysterious nobleman Jacquemo Rie came from, but rather when they get to see him again.

As much as people like him, sadly, an equal amount dislike him. Jacquemo has made quite a number of enemies over the years. While he isn't the most successful businessman or on the higher seats of the court, his service to the people has left many other noblemen and officials shamed, especially those with the resources that could be doing five times his share were they selfless enough. Jacquemo didn't see it as too much of a problem - at least not until after exploration to Iria opened up. Hearing of people having troubles overseas, he went to see how he could help, only to find himself returning home with an adopted elf and several more rumors. To make matters worse, there was talk of an incident where the criminal's description was dangerously close to his own. A criminal who was also responsible for the loss suffered by the child he had with him.

Of course, his enemies took advantage of this situation. Rumors spread like wildfire, and past gossip came back to haunt him. The part that worried Jacquemo most was that some of the rumors of his past were true - especially the ones about him being a Chaos Knight during Emain Macha's strife with the Fomors, the smuggling operations he was grievously a part - of which contributed to half his wealth, not to mention who those deals were with...they were all still unproven rumors, but certainly not ones he wanted to remember, or be poked and prodded for. So by the time the knights came to take him into custody for questioning, he was already out of Tara and disappearing into Erinn.

The other nobles got rid of him as they wanted; and as the war escalated, so did suspicions toward him. As it turned out, he shared an uncanny resemblance to the emperor of the faction - the same man responsible for the first incident he was in trouble for. As a result, he was labelled even more things - spy, doppleganger, the emperor himself. "Scourge of Erinn" was his particular favorite.

Unable to find a way to clear his name or these accusations, Jacquemo was forced to disappear back into Iria, working as faceless mercenary under the handle of "Mumbles". Due to the sight of the over-sized helmet (and more helmets beneath that by some miracle) which brought this name about though, he later became known as "Helmet". Seeing as his speech was unintelligible with the thing on and he refused to take it off for the sake of hiding his identity, Jacquemo had no choice but to play along.

With the long wait of the war finally over and a message being delivered that cleared him of all charges, Jacquemo has been more than thrilled at the chance to return home from his secret crusade in the wilderness. However, there seems to be plenty for him to rebuild in the year he was gone. His tarnished reputation aside, his "look-alike" seemed to have made a fine mess of things in his absence.
