Tracking Compass
IC Item:
- Composite Tracking Compass
Item Class:
- Item
OOC Item:
- None
Description:
- The Composite tracking compasses incorporate a tracking mechanism based on layered enchantments. Excluding the magnetic bearing needle, each of the other needles are enchanted individually to sync with one of the other compasses, which are enchanted themselves, and thus give a bearing to the compasses location. The compasses are not individualized to any particular person, so anyone who gets there hands on one can use it. The compasses are about 3 inches in diameter and about an inch thick. The magnetic needle is white with a red tip that acts as a normal magnetic compass pointing north, sitting on top. The other three needles are black, each marked with a number from 1 - 4 minus the number of the compass they are in, and sit in numerical order from least to greatest, 1 sitting above 2 and so on. The metal casing is silver, with a glass lens. The compasses have a cloth strap, about a foot long, that is attached to a maneuverable metal ring on the side of the compass. Each compass has the Pack crest imprinted on the rear of the compass
Effects:
- None
Notes:
- There are four CTC in total.
- Each CTC have four needles in total. A standard magnetic needle on top and three needles below that corresponding to the other CTC.
- The CTC are more accurate at night time, or when surrounded by dense mana.
- The CTC are completely nullified in the shadow realm, or dampened by the presence of dense erg.
- CTC in the shadow realm cannot be tracked by the other CTC.
Level:
- 1

Re: Tracking Compass
Small question... what happens if one compass is in the shadow realm (Or another world). Where would the other compasses point?

Did you read the application completely, Xeek? If not, you should....

I did, as far as I can tell...
The compasses point at each other. If a compass is in the shadow realm, it loses it's properties.
Though, what I am asking is for the compasses OUTSIDE of the shadow realm, do the other compasses go crazy and look for another source? Or do they just stop in their last location?

Re: Tracking Compass
Maybe they would point to Stonehenge? Whichever is closest?
Otherwise, I think they just wouldn't find the one in the realm, in which case it should point north like a normal compass?

That's what I was thinking, but I just wanted to make sure. I'd be cool if the needle would just go haywire and spin continuously until it finds a source.

Re: Tracking Compass
The needled that would normally point to that compass would go dead on all of the other compasses. The compass within the shadow realm would be completely dead except for magnetic readings.

Re: Tracking Compass
Just to verify, after all the questions Xeek asked, my approval still stands.

Re: Tracking Compass
Curious. Is the "dead compass" effect something that affects areas other than Shadow Realm? I'm not just referring to Another World (since there's still some confusion on if that's the same place or not), but also Soul Stream, Avon, instanced and separate dungeons (i.e. what happens if somebody enters Red Potion Rabbie and another enters Blue Potion Rabbie and another enters, say, a Memory Dungeon of some sort?).

As for Avon and areas like it if they have no location in the general world then the needle pointing at that compass would go dead on all other compasses until that compass returned to the general world. As for dungeon the needle would point generally and randomly in the direction of the dungeon I supposed. the needle wouldn't be able to accurately pinpoint the compasses location unless both compasses were in the same dungeon.

Re: Tracking Compass
Alright. Given all of these be rolled for success separately as per our earlier agreement, you have my official approval.

Did I miss something? Why is rolling required?

Re: Tracking Compass
Ok.. So I'll roll for this. Who else will do so?
We'll be determining the difficulty (and thus the % to roll off of), so after that you'll need to pick several numbers between 3-12. I'd say it's difficult because of the number of items involved.

Re: Tracking Compass
He's enchanting the compass to be able to do this. Since it can't actually be represented in game, the enchant success rate will be rolled for just like any other success rate.

Re: Tracking Compass
Jabbs would that mean the monocle would have to be rolled for as well? That's being made through an enchantment as well o To

But.. this doesn't fall under soul power nor adv transmutation? Why would it be rolled for? It's represented by an IC tool. Breaking a potato in half isn't represented in game.

Re: Tracking Compass
The enchant is a success rate, so the roll is to see if the enchant succeeds or not. Whenever you enchant something, the game rolls for you. But since it's an IC thing, we have to roll instead of the game.
